Automating a driveway gate is one of the most-requested upgrades we do, and one where the decisions made before the motor arrives make all the difference. These are the questions we work through with every client.
1. Is the gate built for it?
Motors are rated by gate weight and length. A heavy timber-clad steel gate on a long opening may need a commercial-grade motor. A sliding gate needs a straight, level rack and a rigid post to mount the motor; a swing gate needs solid hinge posts and room for the arms. If we are fabricating the gate, we build these in.
2. Where is the power?
Most residential motors run on 24 V from a transformer that needs a 240 V supply near the gate. That can mean a licensed electrician trenching a cable from the house. Solar kits are an option for remote gate lines with good sun, but check the battery capacity against how many times a day the gate will cycle.
3. How will people get in?
- Remotes for residents.
- Keypad for family, cleaners and deliveries.
- Intercom (audio or video, wired or Wi-Fi) so visitors can call the house.
- Smartphone control via the motor manufacturer’s app or a home-automation hub.
- Exit loop or sensor so the gate opens automatically for cars leaving.
4. What happens in a blackout?
Every motor has a manual release; make sure everyone in the house knows where the key is. Battery back-up modules keep the gate working through short outages.
5. Safety
Automated gates should have photocells (safety beams) so the gate stops and reverses if something crosses the opening, and the motor’s obstacle detection should be set up and tested at installation, not left on the factory default.
6. Who looks after it?
Like any moving equipment, gate motors benefit from an occasional service: greasing hinges or rollers, checking the rack, testing the safety beams. We install and service automation on gates we build and on existing gates. See our automation page or ask us for a quote.
